United Nations Secretary General Ban ki-Moon and the UN Security Council (UNSC) strongly condemned the Mumbai terrorist attacks and said no cause or grievance could justify indiscriminate violence against civilians.

The UNSC issued a statement expressing solidarity with India in the fight against terror and saying that terrorism anywhere and in any form had no justification. "The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," the UNSC statement said yesterday.

The Secretary General, in a separate statement, expressed solidarity with the Government and people of India and extended condolences to the families of the victims. "The Secretary-General condemns the attacks that have killed and injured many in Mumbai on July 13. No cause or grievance can justify indiscriminate violence against civilians.

The Secretary-General expresses his solidarity with the government and people of India, and extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims," a statement issued by the Secretary General's spokesman said. A statement issued by the UNSC President Guido Westerwelle, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, said the members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks that occurred in various parts of Mumbai, causing numerous deaths and injuries.

They expressed deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the victims of these heinous acts and to their families, and to the people and Government of India. The members of the Security Council reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations.
